Kolkata’s Iconic Buildings Turn Blue on World Children’s Day to Uphold Children’s Rights

Iconic structures like Bidhan Sabha Bhavan (Assembly Building), Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry building in Kolkata were illuminated in blue light on 20th November to commemorate World Children’s Day and uphold the rights and aspirations of the children.

Alongside these buildings, Kolkata Press Club and UNICEF office here were also lit up in blue light to espouse the rights of children on World Children’s Day (20 November).

Through the illumination and other activities involving children, UNICEF wants to urge adults to revisit their childhood memories and make a renewed promise to support children’s rights and aspirations.

This year’s World Children’s Day is being commemorated by UNICEF in India on the themes of ‘My Day. My Rights’ centering around rights that children want for themselves and ‘The Child in Me. My Promise to Children’ on promises adults make to children, UNICEF said today in a statement, adding that the campaign calls on adults to reconnect with their own childhood journeys and commit to supporting today’s children.

“The illumination is going to create curiosity and build awareness among people towards the importance of creating a world of peace, opportunity, equality, safety, dignity and inclusiveness for every child,” Dr Monjur Hossain, Chief of UNICEF in West Bengal, said.

“It is likely to send out a message requesting to uphold the rights of the children to their full potential,” he said.

On this occasion, UNICEF West Bengal today convened a meeting with several Civil Society Organisations here to plan and collectively work for the children towards their prospective future and promote their rights.

This forum will promote enriched learning from best practices, facilitate knowledge sharing and skills enhancement and also know about each other’s work, UNICEF said in the statement.
