Voluntary Services by NGOs at Gangasagar Mela Transit Camp in Kolkata

Several NGOs are providing voluntary services at the Gangasagar Mela Transit Camp in Babughat, Kolkata, to ensure a smooth and safe experience for pilgrims.

Many NGOs are working with the state government to manage solid waste and plastic waste at the mela ground. The social activists and green crusaders are collecting and segregating waste, and upcycling it into eco-friendly products like handmade cloth dolls and decorative glass bottles.

The West Bengal government has also launched an initiative to provide assistance to pilgrims, including food and accommodation, at the transit camp.

Jaunpur Nagarik Sangh, founded in 1996 at Howrah, is engaged in serving pilgrims traveling to Gangasagar. They have arranged meals for 2 lakh people. They have set up a medical camp for the pilgrims in need. The organization’s President is Mr. Lalmani Mishra and Mr Ram Bhual Tiwari serves as Chairman. Mr. Sudhakar Roy, in charge of media relations, said that they have donated blankets to 500 needy people. They have also arranged bus transportation to and from Gangasagar. They have provided financial assistance to those facing difficulties. The organization has more than 100 members. They undertake various other charitable activities throughout the year.

The Gangasagar Mela, which attracts millions of pilgrims, is considered one of the largest melas in India after Kumbh Mela. The event is being held from January 10 to 18, with the holy dip scheduled on January 14-15.
