159th Annual Exhibition of Government College of Art and Craft Calcutta

The 159th Annual Exhibition of Government College of Art and Craft Calcutta, Parampara 2023-2024, was inaugurated at the Academy of Fine Arts on 4th March. Prof. Chhatrapati Dutta, Principal of Government Art and Craft College Calcutta along with faculty members and distinguished guests were also present.

About 550 students of the College are displayed their works of painting & sculpture. The exhibition will be open for public till 10th March from 2 pm to 8 pm.

Generally Annual Exhibition held every year at the college premises, an exception had to be made due to the ongoing and much needed renovation of the heritage building of the college.

The exhibition showcases the best selected artworks of the students from foundation levels to post- graduate levels of all specializations of the institution, like Painting, Painting Indian Style, Graphic Design/Applied Art, Printmaking, Modelling and Sculpture, Ceramic Art and Pottery, Textile Design, Design Wood and Leather & Mural Art.

Seventh semester student Dipshikha Ghosh exhibits her sculpture ‘Rotation’ made of wood and fiber glass.

Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta, is one of the oldest and most prestigious Visual Arts institutions in the subcontinent. Since its inception in 1854 at Garanhata, the institution developed a tradition of exhibiting the artworks of its students annually. The student’s exhibition was first held in 1855, from 22nd of January to 3rd of February under the banner of erstwhile Calcutta School of Art.

The institution boasts of being the alma mater of illustrious alumna and alumnae, who have been part of previous Parampara exhibitions. They have left their indelible mark on the global art scenario. In the present times, the apolitical Student’s Union of the college has been trying to collectively carry on the legacy. The institution’s Principal Prof. Chhatrapati Dutta, the student’s union, students, teachers, the coordinators of the exhibition and the office staff members have constantly contributed earnestly to make this art event successful in every way.
