Bakery Industry in Crisis: BFI Raises Concerns Over Government Policies

The Bakers’ Federation of India (BFI) has expressed deep concerns about the bakery industry’s struggles due to government policies. With over thousands of bakers as members, BFI is fighting for the survival of the industry. To discuss on several crucial issues, West Bengal Bakers’ Association organized it’s 25th Annual Bakers’ Meet on 3rd August at Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan in Kolkata.

Key Issues highlighted at the event are as follows:

– Taxation and Licenses: The industry is burdened with multiple licenses and taxes.
– Competition from Multinational Companies: Large corporations have been given licenses to procure wheat and essential commodities, affecting MSMEs.
– Government Programs: Initiatives like the 100-day job security program and mid-day meal have created labor shortages.

“We are trying our level best to develop bakery industries of our state in our own capacity. But we are suffering from various problems since the last 30 years”, said Mr. Ariful Islam on behalf of West Bengal Bakers’ Association.

West Bengal Bakers’ Association demands the following measures for betterment of bakery industry.

-Review GST Tariff: Reconsider GST percentage for the bakery industry.
– Withdraw Government Programs: Immediately withdraw programs affecting MSMEs.
– Limit Multinational Companies: Withdraw unlimited stock licenses for essential commodities.
– Single Window License System: Implement a single window license system.
– Review Electricity Charges: Reduce electricity costs for MSMEs.

The BFI’s concerns highlight the need for policy reforms to support the bakery industry and MSME sector.
