Prime Minister Narendra Modi today commissioned three indigenously designed and built Indian Navy platforms — stealth frigate INS Dunagiri, survey vessel INS Sanshodhak, and anti-submarine warfare craft INS Agray — at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port here, marking a major push for ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in defence.
Addressing the gathering at approximately 9:15 AM, the Prime Minister said the simultaneous induction of the three frontline platforms “significantly augments the operational strength and capabilities of the Indian Navy”. The ceremony was attended by West Bengal Governor R N Ravi, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.
All three ships were designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata. Together they cover maritime combat, hydrographic surveying, and coastal anti-submarine warfare.
INS Dunagiri: The fifth Project 17A stealth frigate, armed with BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles and the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile system. It enhances blue-water combat capability with a reduced radar cross-section and advanced sensors.
INS Sanshodhak: The fourth Survey Vessel (Large), tasked with coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys. It carries autonomous underwater vehicles and remotely operated vehicles to collect oceanographic and geophysical data for defence and civil use.
INS Agray: The fourth Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and shallow-water sonar to counter underwater threats in littoral waters.
The Ministry of Defence noted that indigenous content in each vessel exceeds 75%, involving over 200 Indian MSMEs and generating significant employment. Officials said the tri-commissioning reflects the Navy’s balanced approach to capability development — strengthening blue-water operations, enhancing maritime domain awareness, and securing coastal waters.
This is only the second instance in recent years of three frontline naval platforms being commissioned together, after the January 2024 induction of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri and INS Vaghsheer in Mumbai.
