Marking a major leap in hemato-oncology and regenerative medicine, Ruby General Hospital and Ruby Cancer Centre on 15th May inaugurated a state-of-the-art Stem Cell and Cellular Therapy Transplantation Unit, commonly known as a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit.
The unit was inaugurated by Dr. Sourav Dutta, Director, and Mrs. Ruby Dutta, in the presence of Founder Chairman Dr. Kamal K. Dutta. The new facility is built to international standards and will provide lifesaving treatment for both children and adults with complex blood disorders.
Key Features of the BMT Unit:
– 6 specialized isolation rooms with dedicated HEPA filtration via individualized HVAC systems to minimize infection risk.
– Touch-free infrastructure including hermetically sealed automatic doors and sensor-enabled plumbing fittings.
– Fully RO and UV treated water facilities throughout the unit.
– In-unit critical care support with provision for dialysis and advanced life support systems.
– Integrated Stem Cell Apheresis Room with capacity for stem cell product storage.
– In-house blood irradiation and advanced Blood Centre facilities.
– Ante rooms for family members to stay with paediatric patients.

The center will offer a comprehensive care spectrum including autologous and allogeneic transplants, covering matched sibling, unrelated, and haploidentical transplants. It is also designed to support advanced cellular therapies like CAR–T Cell therapy. A dedicated multidisciplinary team of oncologists, hematologists, nurses, and technicians will manage the unit, backed by Ruby General Hospital’s multi-speciality clinical team.
“This state-of-the-art facility will provide life-saving treatment to patients, offering them a second chance at life,” said Dr. Kamal Kumar Dutta, Chairman and Managing Director, Ruby General Hospital.
During the press meet, Prof. Dr. Tuphan Kanti Dolai, Senior Haematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist, addressed common facts and misnomers about BMT. The hospital’s first BMT patient from 2024 was also present at the event.
In a gesture of support, Mrs. Ruby Dutta felicitated Ms. Srijani Sahu, a Thalassaemia patient who scored exceptionally well in her Higher Secondary Exams and aspires to become a psychologist. The Ruby Cancer Care & Research Foundation announced it will financially support her academic pursuits for the next three years.
The event also showcased the case of Mr. Sauptik Bhattacharjee, a 17-year-old IIT aspirant from Tripura. Diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, he underwent a complex bone tumor excision and reconstruction surgery led by Dr. Oindrila Biswas, MS, MCh, Surgical Oncologist.
Where amputation was once the standard plan of treatment, advances in surgical planning now allow limb salvage using customized mega prostheses. Sauptik was discharged last week and attended the event to share his experience.
Ruby General Hospital and Ruby Cancer Centre have provided multi-speciality clinical care for 32 years. Ruby Cancer Centre was the first in Eastern India to launch advanced radiation therapy machines: the Clinac iX with FFF Technology in 2014 and Varian TrueBeam 3.0 in 2024. It is also the only hospital in Kolkata with Digital PET CT.
The new BMT unit is expected to offer new hope for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and sickle cell disease who previously had limited access to such advanced care in the region.
