The Chief Postmaster General, West Bengal Circle, Shri Ashok Kumar, on 19 September inaugurated SHAKTIPEX-2025 (Echoes through Stamps), a two-day District Level Philatelic Exhibition organised by the Central Kolkata Division at the historic Kolkata GPO. Themed “Fragrance of Bengal through Stamps”, the event celebrates the State’s rich cultural heritage while highlighting women empowerment just days before the beginning of the festival of Nari Shakti, i.e., Durga Puja.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. Santa Dutta (De), Vice Chancellor, University of Calcutta, as Chief Guest, along with Shri Supriyo Ghosh, Postmaster General (MM & BD), Dr. Hammad Zafar, Director of Postal Services, HQ, WB Circle and senior officers of the Department.
Releasing a Special Cover on Durga Puja, Shri Ashok Kumar explained how Durga Puja embodies the spirit of Nari Shakti as he says, it is only fitting that this philatelic exhibition carries forward the same message through stamps. He stated how Philately is not just about collecting stamps, it is about preserving culture, and values for generations to come.
More than 80 frames were on display under both Invitee and Competitive Classes. Various activities, including philately workshops, quiz and drawing competitions were organised for school students. Selected drawings may even be considered for future postal stamps. Shri Kumar highlighted that philately nurtures curiosity, research, and analytical skills among young learners, making it a valuable hobby that complements education.
Officials noted that SHAKTIPEX-2025 is a trailer to the main Philatelic Exhibition to be hosted later this year in Kolkata, giving the public a glimpse into how stamps can blend art and innovation.
The event saw participation from eminent philatelists, and students from various schools, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to popularise philately as both a cultural pursuit and an educational component.
